The Mentors


       
      To support and assist the film makers with technical expertise and experience we paired each of them with a professional mentor who was able to supply the relevant interest and experience.
       
      The Mentors were:
     
  • Don Coutts, director, Move on Up based in Cromarty
  • Lindy Cameron, editor and film maker, Move on Up, Cromarty
  • Alisdair Brotherston of Dirty Earthworm Productions based in Edinburgh
  • Claire Armstrong of Animax Studios based in Tain
       
     

The Films

Ruth Brain’s idea was to make an animation film called The Music Maker. It’s the story of a depressed girl who expresses her emotions through a mysterious music maker which changes the world around her. Ruth’s mentor was Alasdair Brotherston. Working as director he supported Ruth as she used the software package Flash MX to her create imagery.

Oliver Smith wanted to make an animation film called S.M.A.S.H. which is a spoof of 1970’s M.A.S.H. His mentor was Claire Armstrong. Claire suggested that he should use a program called Toon Boom to create his film and also tutored Oliver using Web Cams and Skype communication technology.

Jean Mackay wanted to make a short documentary to show how the Merkinch community benefited from The Janny’s Hoose establishment. Working with mentor Charlie Wilson as the director and editor their film portrays events at the Janny’s Hoose using voiceovers as commentary.

Kate Fairclough and the Highland Muslim Educational Association had the idea of making a music video to celebrate the diversity of culture within the Highlands. Don Coutts and Lindy Cameron of Move on Up Film and Television Production Company, Cromarty were their mentors. It was recorded on digital beta tape and edited by Lindy Cameron. The film’s music Celtic Bhangra was composed especially for the video.

Vicky Stonebridge was inspired by Studio Ghibli to create her animation “Who’s Afraid?”
This is the story of a little girl who overcomes her fears of the unknown, takes a risk and faces the consequences. Who’s Afraid was also directed by Claire Armstrong using the software Mirage to produce this animation.

Rachael Mill produced The Seer, the story of Coinneach Odhar the famous prophet who foretold many events and changes in the Highlands. The film is about a young girl who finds the seer’s stone and was directed by Don Coutts and edited by Emma Dove. The film was shot on digital beta

       
     

In addition a Digital Eden Panel was also set up to select the six film making projects, oversee budgets and offer advice and assistance.
